HERO Class Syllabus for 2010-2011

Course Text: Explorations 1 – A Music History Overview by Frederick Harris Music ($44.95)

Course Instructor: Wendy Moyer

Email: wendy@pmoyer.org

Course Description:

This class will offer an overview of musical time periods, composers and styles, musical genres, and instrumentation. Musical eras will be correlated with the cultural era of the time (art, literature, architecture and historical influences). There will be required listening time outside of class, in addition to some concert attendance. It is necessary to have internet access in order to complete the listening assignments. Books for this class will need to be purchased separately.

Supplies needed for this course:

Students will need a 3 ring binder (with pockets) dedicated to this class, plain paper, a pencil and highlighters (yellow, pink and orange), and their textbook each week.

Grading Information:

Students will be graded on four things: homework assignments/listening, quizzes, concert attendance and their attendance/participation in class. Each of these items will represent one-fourth of their final grade.

Grading Scale: Students will be given a percentage grade.

Guidelines for Success:

This is a high school level class: Weekly time for homework will average 2 hours per week. An additional 24 hours (for the year long class) will be spent on projects and concert attendance.
